Bison have begun their annual migration north out of Yellowstone and hunters from Native American tribes have killed 39 of them so far this week. Park officials say several hundred more appear to be poised to leave the park boundary. Bison managers agreed to cull between 600 and 900 bison this winter through hunting and trapping operations. Trapped bison may be sent to slaughter or enrolled in a quarantine program meant to prepare them for transfer to Native American lands. Disease-free status would allow them to be transferred to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation for final brucellosis tests and later transferred to other tribes to boost existing herds or establish new ones. Approximately 49-hundred of the animals were counted in the park’s population this year.
