Bison removals began at the Stephens Creek administrative area in Yellowstone National Park late last week as the animals began to migrate from the interior of the park into the Gardiner, Montana Basin.
The gathering of the bison at Stephens Creek is part of the Interagency Bison Management Plan, whose partners include federal, state and Tribal groups. This year’s operation plan recommends removing 600 to 900 animals from the more than 5,000 bison in the Yellowstone’s population.
Once the bison are captured, they will be transferred to Native American Tribes for processing and distribution of meat and hides to their members, or brucellosis-free bison will be moved to Tribal lands.
