Yellowstone National Park search and rescue crews reported they located the body of Chimacum, Washington Resident Mark O’Neill along the east shore of Shoshone Lake Monday. The 67-year-old O’Neill and his half-brother, 74-year-old Kim Crumbo, from Ogden, Utah, were reported overdue from their four-night backcountry trip to Shoshone Lake Sunday by a family member.
Search and rescue efforts to locate Crumbo continue on foot in the area. Grand Teton National Park interagency helicopter and crew are also assisting with air operations. Searchers located a vacant campsite with gear on the southeast shore of Shoshone Lake Sunday, along with a canoe, paddle, PFD and other personal belongings.
Both O’Neill and Crumbo are National Park Service retirees, and Crumbo is a former Navy Seal. The incident remains under investigation. Shoshone Lake, the park’s second-largest lake, is located at the head of the Lewis River southwest of West Thumb.
