Fire resources from the Bridger-Teton National Forest responded to the Spring Creek Fire north of Kemmerer, Wyoming at approximately 1:45 pm, July 17, 2018.
Fire engines from Big Piney and Pinedale Ranger Districts along with the Teton Module, the Interagency Helicopter, and Lincoln County Brush 2 responded to the lightning-caused fire located 27-miles north of Kemmerer, WY. A 10-person Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fire Module and the 20-person Teton Crew worked to suppress the 2/10 of an acre fire. The fire was extinguished July 23, 2018 at 2:30pm.
Wildfires burning under the right weather conditions and in appropriate locations can break-up forest fuels and create landscapes that are more resistant to large, high-severity fires. A combination of tools, including the use of restoration wildfire, can help managers reduce the risk of future mega-fires in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Naturally-ignited fires managed for restoration purposes can improve forest health and resilience and resistance to high-severity wildfires. However, in the thick dead and fallen fuels where this fire was ignited, and the proximity to structures in the nearby area, the decision was made to work to extinguish the fire. “Even with the rain earlier this season, conditions remain very dry and incidents can escalate quickly,” said Kemmerer District Ranger Adriene Holcomb. “Fortunately with the cooperation of our fire partners in Lincoln County, Teton Interagency Fire, and the BLM, we were able to jump on the wildfire quickly to keep it from growing.”
Fire danger for the Forest is currently ‘moderate,’ but fuels are beginning to dry out and thunderstorms producing lighting with little precipitation are becoming more frequent throughout the area. Fires can start from most accidental causes. For additional information, contact the Bridger-Teton National Forest at 307-739-5500 or visit www.Tetonfires.com .
