Broncs Begin Basketball Season

A new season is underway for both girls and boys local basketball teams and while the fresh start looked like the same old, same old for Jackson, there is reason to hope.
The girls, in particular, were impressive in their first home game of the year. Coming off a late-night loss to Lander (43-35) in Fremont County the Lady Broncs responded well Friday night at home against Cheyenne South. Jackson was in commend for most of the night after a quick 5-0 start had the bench pumping and Coach Jason Huggins pleased with what he saw to begin the 2020-21 campaign at home.
For the second straight night, the Lady Broncs got a big lift from newcomer Karsen Breeding. The 6-foot freshman poured in 14 points to go with her team-leading 18 the night before in a loss to Lander.
Audrey Fouras caught fire in the second half to keep Jackson in it as the South Lady Bison stayed patient and made their move to begin the second half. Fouras did most of her damage in the 3rd quarter, finishing with 15 on the night.
The Lady Broncs lost momentum and emotion as the Bison chipped away at the Jackson lead—as much as 7 at one point—before South dominated a tiring Broncs team in the 4th, outscoring Jackson 20-10 in the final frame to hand the Lady Broncs a 49-46 loss.
The Lady Broncs begin the 20-21 season 0-2. Their next game is a non-conference bout with Laramie this Friday before returning home to see the Lander Lady Tigers on Saturday, December 19.
Boys lose their opener
Coach Sam Lunz has a promising squad this season—certainly a deeper bench than what he had to work with in last year’s dismal winless run. Still, the Broncs did not take care of the ball well enough in their opener against Lander and could not get shots to fall when they had decent looks.
The 61-35 loss for the Broncs makes it 23 straight losses for Jackson. Gavin Brunner’s 10 points led all Jackson scorers. Sam Lopeman added 8, Rowan Bruno 5 including Jackson’s only 3-pointer.
Lander’s quickness gave Jackson fits all night in the season opening Thursday night. Tiger guards—the cat-quick Guina brothers, Julien and Tisso—sliced and diced their way to the hoop when given a sliver of a lane. If it wasn’t turnovers and the transition game, Lander’s big man, the 6’5” Jonas Calvert, made hay in the paint.
The final score—a 61-35 loss—wasn’t exactly encouraging for the Broncs, but Jackson showed signs of being able to put a few things together season where they could not last year.
The steady play of seniors Gavin Brunner and Sam Lopeman will keep Jackson within striking distance in every game they play this year. Rowan Bruno and Aiden Walker made big strides in their development over the off-season. And new faces like Isaac Larsen, Andrew Hanna, Gavin Keelin, and Seb Brunner give Lunz options off the bench.
Fearless prediction: The Broncs will not go winless this season.
