Broncs show resolve in losses
A busy weekend of basketball began with another edition of the Snake River Shootout as the Broncs renewed their age-old rivalry with the Star Valley Braves.
The girls were hammered in a low-scoring affair, 36-18. The boys gave the Braves a bit of a scare as they all but erased a 15-point deficit with a monster 3rd quarter where they held Star Valley to just one basket. But the Braves pulled away for a 44-31 win.
The game was a likely preview of opening round of Quadrant playoffs where #1 will meet #4 on March 4 in Star Valley. The Broncs (1-15, 0-5) are currently ranked #4 in the 4A SW while the Braves (11-6, 5-0) are ranked #1.
On Saturday, Jackson returned home to host Green River where the Lady Broncs got their second look at the team they are likely to see on March 4 when the postseason begins. The Lady Wolves (11-4, 5-0) secured another victory over Jackson, this one a 63-45 final.
The Lady Broncs did their best to hang with the state’s top 4A SW team. Jackson chipped their way back into the game, pulling within 11 in the 3rd thanks to Audrey Fouras’ 17 points. Karsen Breeding added 10 along with a team-high 11 rebounds. Joanna Smits was good for 8 and Gracie Hardeman pitched in 6.
Jacie Chatham left the contest early with an apparent ankle injury. The same type of setback caused her to miss two games earlier this season.
The boys were buried by Green River from the get-go. Jackson could not recover from a slow start, trailing the Wolves 19-4 after the first 8 minutes.
Gavin Brunner paced the Broncs with 12, including 5 boards. Andrew Hanna and Gavin Keelin both pitched in 9 in the 65-34 losing effort.
All four games were heard on KZ95. Next up for the Broncs are home makeup games with the Riverton Wolverines on February 23. Girls will start at 4:00pm, boys tap at 5:30pm.
