The Jackson Lady Broncs dropped two more this 20-21 season but not without giving the hometown fans a thrill last weekend.
After running up against a tough draw in the Laramie Lady Plainsmen on Friday to begin the Flaming Gorge Tournament, the Lady Broncs returned home the following afternoon seeking revenge against the team that beat them to open the season—a 43-35 loss to Lander Valley on December 10.
Jackson started strong, pounding the ball inside to Gracie Hardeman, making full use of the height advantage the Lady Broncs had with the 5’10’’ Hardeman matching well in the paint. Hardeman’s 10 points in the first half helped Jackson to a keep pace with the Lady Tigers until a knee injury sidelined her for the second half.
Jackson got as close as 2 points behind Lander thanks for Audrey Fouras’ 10 points and 7 from Karsen Breeding, but Lander got key 3-pointers from Megan Winfield (14 pts) tough inside play from Demi Stauffenberg (10 pts), and freshman Taline Tendore off the bench was electric.
After the 56-32 loss to Laramie, Jackson’s 52-41 final against Lander puts the girls at 0-4 to start the season.
The boys fared little better. They were thrashed by the Plainsmen of Laramie in the Flaming Gorge Tournament on Friday by a score of 57-25. The rematch with Lander after losing to that team on December 10 did not go much better.
Jackson trailed by just a bucket after a defensive first half. Their nemesis again was not being able to hit open shots…or any shots. Sloppy passing in the second half also hurt the Orange & Black.
Against Laramie, Jackson shot a dismal 14% from beyond the arc compare to the Plainsmen’s 42%. The Broncs struggled to make 1 of every 4 shots they took from the field on Friday.
Defense was good against Lander but the Tigers stayed patient until their big man Jonas Calvert got hot. He ended the night with a team-high 15 to pace the Big Green. Junior point guard Tisso Guina added 11, helping Lander pad an 18-16 lead at the half to a 57-36 final.
Coach Sam Lunz managed to get some underclassmen a bit of playing time, and had to be encouraged by freshman bigs Andrew Hanna and Gavin Keelin. Together with sophomore Isaac Hayden, the JV players gave the Broncs some lift in the second half.
Hanna and Keelin led all Broncs scorers with 8 a piece. Sam Lopemen and Gavin Brunner each added 6, while Henry Berezay finished with 4. Rowen Bruno and Isaac Larsen added 2 a piece.
The boys fall to 0-3. They play a makeup game against Cheyenne South on December 30 at home.
