Fire managers on the Bridger-Teton National Forest are planning to burn piles in a 96-acre area located between Cedar Creek and Lost Creek near Star Valley Ranch. Certain criteria has to be met in order for these piles to be burned, including smoke dispersal conditions, snow or other precipitation in the burn area, adequate staffing, and fuel moisture. These are all outlined in a burn plan, which has beeen thoroughly reviewed before implementation. Fire managers are estimating that the conditions will be correct for ignition within the month, likely late April to mid-May. Smoke will be visible in Star Valley Ranch, and the surrounding area during operations and for a short time after lighting has been completed. Crews will be hand igniting the piles using drip torches. Forest officials explain that fuel reduction projects create more open areas that will help moderate fire behavior during a wildfire which increases firefighter and public safety.
