On June 26th, the Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) will host a ceremony to honor the birth of a sacred white buffalo calf earlier this month. The event will take place on the sovereign land of the Shoshone-Bannock and will be led by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and Bundle. The ceremony is open to all people and major media outlets.
James Holt, Sr., Executive Director of BFC, expressed hope that the birth of the white buffalo calf will bring attention to the plight of the wild buffalo, particularly in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Chief Arvol Looking Horse, an elder of the Mni Coujou Lakota and Spiritual Leader of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Oyate, emphasized the event’s significance for many Indigenous nations. He reminded everyone of the prophecy of the White Buffalo Calf Woman, who foretold her return during hard times in the form of a white buffalo calf.

The birth of the white buffalo calf is seen as a blessing and a warning, signaling the need for global cooperation to protect the wellbeing of Grandmother Earth. It calls for Tribal Nations to come together to honor traditional lifeways, shared history, and ecological knowledge, and to guide a sustainable future in harmony with nature.
J. Dallas Gudgell, Vice President of the BFC Board, highlighted the importance of honoring traditional lifeways and working together for a sustainable future based on coexistence, respect, responsibility, restoration, reciprocity, and humility.
