“It was pretty nerve-wracking!” That’s how Laurie Andrews of the Jackson Hole Land Trust describes the last few hours of the $4-million by the Fourth of July goal. However, the donations needed to make up the 1000 needed to qualify for the latest $1-million-dollar match grant came in just about the time the parade was getting under way. In the end, the drive actually ended up with 1200 donations this time, and a grand total of $4.1-million has been raised since the drive to Save the Block was started in May. That leaves $2.5-million left to raise by August 5th, and Andrews says it is hoped another generous donor will come forward with yet another match grant.A total of $7.5 million is needed by then to protect the property from a 90-thousand square foot hotel development. Asked how the calamitous fire at Café Genevieve might have impacted the Save the Block Drive, Andrews said she did not believe it had any effect on the drive itself. However, she said it did serve to highlight how important it is to protect these historic buildings.
