No new information is immediately available about a serious fire that heavily damaged Café Genevieve early Tuesday morning. Teton County Fire Marshal Kathy Clay says the call came in around 3:00 am and drew fire units from Jackson, Adams Canyon and Wilson. Clay says firefighters arrived to find the fire had extended through the roof and even torched the tree above the building.
Jackson Hole Fire Chief Brady Hansen says the firefighters arrived (in his words) “in a nick of time to save the building.” Hansen says when they arrived, flames were rising approximately 70 feet into the air. He says the fire originated outside the building, worked its way into the attic and the kitchen, and destroyed the kitchen. Hansen says the fire was beginning to make its way into the dining area. He says while the damage is heavy, the historic structure has been saved, although there is a fair amount of cosmetic damage.
State fire inspectors have been assisting in sifting through the damaged structure and determine a cause. Meanwhile, the fire will force an extensive closure of the popular restaurant.
