An undernourished black bear cub arrived at a rehab facility in Boise, Idaho after being captured in the backyard of a Jackson residence recently. The cub-of-the-year was estimated to be about 10 months old weighed only 20 pounds. He had been eating crabapples in the backyard of a local residence just south of town for a couple of days, and the homeowner said he looked cold and hungry. Game & Fish spokesperson Mark Gocke said the orphaned cub likely would not have survived the winter on its own. Biologists made the decision to capture the tiny bear. It was sent to a local veterinarian for a checkup even as Game & Fish searched for a place that would take it. Thankfully, arrangements were made to have the cub spend the winter at Idaho Black Bear Rehab, Incorporated in Boise, where it will remain until it can be released back into the wild in Wyoming, hopefully next spring. A spokesperson at the facility said the cub is settling in just fine.
