The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is set to update its mask advice this week to best reflect the available options and the different levels of protection they provide. Many experts say cloth and surgical masks don’t provide enough protection, and instead encourage N95 or FFP2 coverings.
Properly fitted N95 respirators that are approved by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health can filter up to 95% of particles in the air, according to the CDC. A cloth face covering, by contrast, has 75% inward and outward leakage.
In Jackson, the desire for personal protection is ramping up as the count of COVID-19 cases over the past seven days has risen by 1052, which the health department is terming “extremely high.”
