It’s chicken fry time again for the Wilson Fire Department with gates opening at noon and the chicken being served until it runs out. Despite the firefighters cooking 3500 pounds of chicken and 1200 pounds of potatoes this year, Firefighter Tyler Hartz says it’s not expected to last more than a few hours.
Hartz says, “We definitely serve it until the chicken runs out – we upped it to 3500 pounds this year and 1200 pounds of potatoes. We’re basically upping it because we’re expecting a big turnout.
Hartz says while there is no specific use for the money raised by the chicken fry this year, there are the standard needs, like training. “The money that we earn during this chicken fry go to trainings, and we buy meals with it for our trainings and things like that and extra equipment to beef up what we get from the county.”
The cost of the meal is $12 and includes chicken, Dutch oven potatoes, a roll and salad – as well as this year having entertainment from Nashville recording artist Matt Stillwell. Participants need to bring their own chairs. The line opens at noon and Hartz says firefighters from the valley’s other fire stations put themselves on call, to cover for the Wilson team just as Wilson participates in backing Hoback and Moran when they do their barbecues.
