The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has confirmed the emergence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in two adult female elk from Elk Hunt Area 87, situated in the Pinedale Region. The first elk was discovered deceased in January, with another found in early February, both at the Dell Creek feedground.
This development marks the initial detection of CWD in Hunt Area 87 and within the Upper Green River Elk Herd. It’s also the second time elk have tested positive at a feedground, following a case at Scab Creek feedground in December.
Elk Hunt Area 87 is adjacent to two other areas, 84 and 92, already known to harbor the disease. Wildlife Division Deputy Chief Justin Binfet commented on the situation, stating, “It is unfortunate and concerning to find CWD on an elk feedground; however, it was not unexpected given this disease continues to spread throughout the West.” He also highlighted the department’s proactive approach with the creation of the Elk Feedground Management Plan to manage and mitigate CWD risks.
CWD is universally fatal for infected deer, elk, and moose, underscoring the importance of ongoing surveillance to understand its impact and guide future management strategies. The Game and Fish Department will maintain vigilant monitoring at feedgrounds for signs of the disease.
In response to these findings, the department is developing Feedground Management Action Plans (FMAPs) for the Jackson and Pinedale elk herds to devise strategies that reduce dependency on feedgrounds and lessen disease transmission risks. Following the Pinedale Herd’s plan, the next herd for prioritization will be determined.
