A new wildfire has grown rapidly east of Yellowstone National Park. The fire was reported Monday evening in the Washakie Wilderness. The Fishhawk Fire is four miles south of U.S. Highway 14 and is approximately 40 miles west of Cody. The gusty winds Monday evening caused the fire to quickly spread and it was last estimated to involve over 4,000 acres. According to the Forest Service, the primary objective of fire managers is the safety of firefighters and the public. Additionally, the protection of structures and developments along the North Fork corridor is an objective. At this time, there is no estimate for containment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Residents north of town reported seeing the smoke plume.
