When temperatures plummet, the risk of pipes freezing and bursting skyrockets. In fact, burst pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage during frigid weather. According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, they can cause thousands of dollars in water damage—easily $5,000 or more.
The most at-risk pipes are those in unheated interior spaces such as basements, attics, and garages. But even pipes running through cabinets or exterior walls can freeze. Experts recommend allowing water to run at a trickle to keep it flowing. Keep doors of cabinets on outside walls at least slightly open and keep the heat on to at least 50° in your home, or other building with water service even when you are out.
