Jackson Town Council Monday voted to approve a new monument on the town square to be erected by American Legion Post 43, replacing the one that has stood there since 1976 to honor those local residents who gave their lives in defense of their country. One concern that brought considerable discussion was the inclusion in the design of quotations pertaining to various campaigns interspersed with images representative of each of those events. They asked whether instead, images could be substituted, taking the place of the quotations. Commander Greg McCoy of the American Legion also referenced a concern raised by the local Arts Task Force that images of the wars might be offensive to those visiting the park and should be eliminated from the design.
McCoy went on that nearly all who are listed on the monument are deceased, and later generations will not understand anything about these eras if only a list of names are displayed. In giving the project their initial approval, Council asked to review the design again before signing off on the design completely.Council
