County Could Reduce Speed on Highway 22

The Teton County Board of County Commissioners is requesting that the Wyoming Department of Transportation conduct a speed study on Wyoming Highway 22. Specifically, they cite that on September 12th, a 17-year-old Teton County resident and Jackson Hole High School student was killed while driving west on WY-22 after colliding with an SUV traveling east on WY-22. In summer 2017, a longtime Teton County resident was also killed when his vehicle was hit head-on by another car driving in the opposite lane on WY-22. Both fatal accidents happened on WY-22 near the Skyline Ranch Subdivision. There have also been several serious accidents this summer on WY-22 near the Emily’s Pond parking area, causing injury, property damage and debilitating traffic congestion for commuters and visitors. The commissioners point out that serious congestion and heavy side-road traffic contribute to motorists taking risks while entering and exiting WY-22 and that this area is a prime corridor for moose, elk, mule deer and a variety of other species; both of which should be considered when determining the appropriate speed limit.
