Daring Rescue Near Gardiner

On Wednesday June 10, 2015 at approximately 1318 hours Livingston Dispatch received a call from Yellowstone National Park Dispatch reporting a rescue operation beginning on the Yellowstone River Traileast of Gardiner, MT.  The call originated in Yellowstone National Park and after GPS Coordinates were plotted it was determined the incident was in Park County and not Yellowstone National Park.  This was amedical emergency response for a 53 year old Bozeman male unable to continue.Park County Deputies responded to the incident.  Yellowstone National Park Rangers and Fire Cache personnel were already assembled and on scene at the trailhead.  A hasty team of two horseback riders and a medic on foot responded to the location of the patient.The Hasty team requested a life flight and Summit Air was dispatched.  The patient was loaded on a litterand transferred to a Landing Zone.  At approximately 1546 hours the patient was taken by the life flight to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.  The patient and his sister were on a three day two night camping trip from Hell Roaring Trailhead inside Yellowstone National Park and were going to come out above Gardiner on the Yellowstone River Trail.  Rangers estimated the two had over two miles left to hike before McKiernan became too ill to continue. 6-10-15 Rescue
