Jackson Hole residents and visitors found some local traditions distinctly missing this past spring. One of those was the annual Elk Antler Auction and Elkfest. This was to have been the 53rd year. Adapting to the situation, the Antler Auction will be online September 9th through the 19th for anyone interested in purchasing antlers collected from the National Elk Refuge. The elk antler auction is managed by the Headwaters District (formerly Jackson District) of Scouts BSA. In response to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, the Headwaters District BSA got creative and adapted their in-person auction process to an online auction system. Interested persons and bidders can learn more about the virtual antler auction by logging onto elkfest2020.afrogs.org Each year, Scouts and Scout leaders donate approximately 2,000 hours to prepare and execute the auction, which is comparable to one refuge staff member working a 40-hour week for a full year. On average, more than 200 Scouts and adult leaders work for nearly 2,000 hours with refuge personnel during the annual antler project. 75% of the proceeds from the auction are poured back into the refuge for expenses associated with elk habitat enhancement projects.
