Elk Attack

Yellowstone National Park is reporting a female concession employee was injured by a cow elk in the Mammoth Hot Springs area early yesterday morning.
Details of the attack or the extent of the woman’s injuries were not immediately available. The employee was transported to the park hospital via ambulance. Park biologists and rangers then hazed the elk to get the animal to leave the area, which is filled with tourists this time of year attracted by the Mammoth Hotel, restaurants, store and the Albright Visitor Center.
It is typical for cow elk to be in the Mammoth area seeking food and protection from predators. If people approach, the mother elk may act in an aggressive manner to protect its calf. Elk are currently in height of the calving season.
