Emergency rental assistance program has 180 million

39 applications and $124K in assistance have been approved for payment through the state’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program so far. The federally funded program officially launched on April 29th in Wyoming with $180-million available to eligible renters struggling to make rent, internet, and utility payments.
The Wyoming Department of Family Services, with assistance from the Department of Workforce Services, is administering the assistance program. The program’s application review and payment process are taking longer than the initial estimated four weeks.
As of June 1st, 2,600 applicants have requested over $5.4 million in rent and utility assistance. Department of Family Services Director Korin Schmidt says, “We estimate at least 23,000 households in the state may qualify for assistance with making rental payments, but many of those may not have access to computers or need additional help.
Consequently, Schmidt says the department has set up local in-person application assistance in every county. The Department of Family Services and Department of Workforce Services will be hosting two virtual town hall meetings this week to explain the process. Recordings of the meetings will be available at dfs.wyo.gov/erap.
