As Congress approaches the threat of a second government shutdown this year, U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., cosponsored an updated version of the bipartisan Prevent Government Shutdowns Act that would end future government shutdowns. If signed into law, the bill would set up an automatic Continuing Resolution at the current spending level until an agreement on funding is enacted. This would prevent a government-wide shutdown and continue services and operations for Americans. The bill, led by Senators James Lankford of Oklahoma, and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire is also cosponsored by Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Angus King of Maine, and Tim Kaine of Virginia. The bipartisan proposal is a simple solution to address the threat of government shutdowns. If federal funding is not in place through the enactment of all regular appropriations bills or a continuing resolution by October 1st, no official travel will be allowed for Office of Management and Budget leadership or staff and Members of Congress along with their committee and personal staff. Additionally, no other matter may be considered on the floor until the budget is resolved. Meanwhile, the government will continue to be operated at the previous year’s level.
