Today the president signed into law bipartisan legislation, led by U.S. Senators Mike Enzi, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire., to create a commemorative coin honoring Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who died aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. Proceeds from the coin will go toward Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. Enzi explains, “The Christa McAuliffe Commemorative Coin Act will help honor her memory by advancing STEM opportunities for students. I hope people will get a coin of their own to support this cause.” Earlier this year, the Senate and the House of Representatives passed the bill with strong bipartisan support.
