The Davey Jackson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has announced the recognition of two local students for their historical essays.
This year’s topic for contest was “The Boston Massacre,” in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the event. The girls selected were Leisel Maher, a 5th grader at Jackson Hole Classical Academy, and Phoebe Turner, a 6th grader at Mountain Academy of Teton Science School. Each girl will receive a certificate, a check for $50, a pocket-sized copy of the United States Constitution and the “American Revolution” by DK Eyewitness Books.
D.A.R. established this annual essay contest to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation’s history and learn about history in a new light. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness.
The essays submitted by both girls will now advance to the Wyoming state level of competition.
