There have been a great many people this year decorating the outside of their homes with lights and Christmas regalia. In doing so, Fire Marshal Kathy Clay hopes the homeowners are taking note on how much electrical current is being drawn through each circuit so as not to overload it.
“The LED technology has diminished the power usage, but people tend to also overuse extension cords. That’s super important not to piggyback them – you shouldn’t plug extension cord after extension cord after extension cord. Try to go with just one extension cord into the side of the wall.”
Clay adds it is important that nothing heavy is placed on top of the cords since the wires in them are braided, and crushing the braid will compromise its ability to conduct electricity causing them to generate more heat or arc and become a fire hazard.
