The unseasonal weather experienced in this part of the country has proved itself disastrous for many farmers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced yesterday that producers who currently participate in Federal crop insurance and are experiencing a delay in harvesting their crops should contact their Approved Insurance Provider to file a Notice of Loss and request more time to harvest. Producers in several states, in this region have been affected by extremely wet and snowy conditions early this fall. Producers must file a Notice of Loss and request more time to harvest before the end of the insurance period, so that Federal crop insurance claims are settled based on the amount of harvested production. While no reference was made to potatoes, the end of the insurance period for crops such as spring-planted wheat and barley is October 31.
