A grass and sagebrush fire, possibly lightning-caused, raced up the hill behind the National Museum of Wildlife Art yesterday afternoon and threatened homes along the crest of Riva Ridge. Fire units from Jackson /Teton Fire EMS joined with firefighters from Teton Interagency Fire and two helicopters to hold the fire at the top of the ridge. Residents of East Lucas Riva Ridge Road had been evacuated from their homes but returned by 7:30 pm. The Wildlife Museum Fire blackened 80 acres by the time rains moved in, and along with calming winds helped firefighters control the fire. Incident Spokesperson Lori Iverson says the fire was confirmed to have been lightning-caused, and she adds that the area has received considerable lightning over the weekend, and other fires could pop up in the area as a result. She asks that the public watch for smoke and report it immediately.
