In the wake of last week’s explosion that demolished a building and sent its occupant to the University of Utah Burn Center with serious injuries, the Teton County Fire and Rescue in Driggs, Idaho has some advice for propane users. Fire Chief Bret Campbell says if you smell propane, the first thing to do is be sure all smoking materials are extinguished, and lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones are not used. Then, exit the building immediately. Once out, find the valve to shut off the propane supply to the building and call your propane retailer or fire department immediately, either from outside or a neighbor’s phone. Once that is done, Campbell says, wait for the emergency responder or propane technician to arrive – do not re-enter the building.
