An alert passer-by is being credited for reporting a fire at a 4-plex on East Hansen Street before it became more serious. Fire Marshal Kathy Clay says the fire was reported shortly after 11:00 pm and law enforcement personnel had to pound on the door to awaken the resident who was asleep on the second floor. The fire was located in the crawl space under the first floor and Clay says the apartment was filled with smoke. She says in addition to smoke damage, there is a fair amount of structural damage as well. At this time, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, she says it appears the unit did not have a working smoke alarm. Clay says the residents of the three other units did not have to evacuate.
