This is the end of national fire prevention week. The week is intended to encourage homeowners to have a better understanding of fire behavior and fire safety. Among the studies shared by local fire departments is one that states that according to research, an occupant of a home had 17 minutes to escape a house fire thirty years ago, but only three or four minutes now due to the synthetic materials used in furniture and home construction which burn hotter and faster. Another study showed two rooms side-by-side with traditional furnishings and modern furnishings. The modern room was fully engulfed in 3-minutes-40 seconds while fire in the traditional room was still just getting established. It is for this reason, experts say, it is all the more important to have working smoke detectors in several locations around a home and multiple known escape routes.
