Fire Restrictions in Teton County

July 9, 2021 by Jackson Hole Radio

The Teton County Board of Commissioners approved a Partial Fire Restriction Ban in Teton County. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Fire Marshal Kathy Clay explains that the restriction means different things depending on whether you live in the Town of Jackson or in the County.
Clay says, “Open burning in town is illegal. However, in the county you still can do control burns, but again, make sure if you have to burn right now, that you call the burn into the dispatch office, that you have a source of water to be able to put the fire out quickly, be very cognizant of wind – and if you can, I urge everyone to wait until we see some significant moisture to do any further burning right now.”
Homeowners in Teton County are allowed to have a wood fire only if clearances to combustibles are met and a mesh screen with holes no greater than ¼ inch is over the fire while the fire is burning. Fires must be extinguished by dark. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Chief Brady Hansen suggests, “If you love the ambiance of a fire, consider an outdoor gas fireplace, which does not throw hot embers into the area.” Of course, all fireworks are banned at all times of the year in the Town of Jackson and Teton County.
