It is not news residents living near forest lands want to hear. When Forest Service Chief Vicki Christensen was interviewed by National Public Radio Wednesday, she announced that wildfires are now a year-round phenomenon. She adds that the label “fire season” is not an appropriate term anymore. Moreover, Christensen says that a billion acres of land across America are at risk of catastrophic wildfires like last fall’s deadly Camp Fire that destroyed most of Paradise, California. She pointed to the hazardous conditions in forests that result from a history of suppression of wildfires, rampant home development in high-risk places and the changing climate. She assured that the Forest Service will use active management that focuses on wildfire risk reduction, forest products and restoration, and engaging in cross-boundary collaboration to set landscape-scale treatment priorities with the forest’s partners. Additionally, she said the Forest Service will use wildland fire where possible and where it makes sense to achieve desired ecological conditions.
