The Lone Star Fire in Yellowstone National Park near Old Faithful geyser basin continues to burn with behavior currently limited to creeping and smoldering and putting up a fair amount of smoke. A cold front moved into the area Saturday and helped moderate some of the fire behavior. The fire is now estimated to involve 3,914 acres. 29 firefighters are assigned to the fire at this time and their activity has been focused on fuel reduction and structure protection in the Old Faithful Area, with those efforts primarily in the residential area and other utility infrastructure including power lines near the Snow Lodge Cabins. Park officials point out that this work will create a fire buffer that will continue to protect natural resources, cultural treasures, and visitors and residents from this fire, and well into the future. Trails and campsites around Shoshone Lake and Lone Star Geyser remain closed, but the Grand Loop Road between Old Faithful and West Thumb Junction is open. Meanwhile, the Holmes Cave Fire north of Togwotee Pass in the Teton Wilderness is still within two acres of an isolated timber stand.
