Firefighters make progress

August 9, 2021 by Jackson Hole Radio

Fire Grows

Firefighters over the weekend have been able to get a handle on wildfires that have sprang up around the region, including four sparked by lightning Friday night. Specifically, the Cottonwood 2 fire near Lupine meadows in Grand Teton National Park, the Turpin Fire near Ditch Creek on Bridger-Teton National Forest, and the Sheep Fire on Sheep Mountain are considered active, but have been mostly knocked down and are being monitored for possible flare-up.
The Fork Fire near the Buffalo Fork Ranger Station in Grand Teton National Park has been controlled. The Little Granite Fire at the Little Granite Creek headwaters has been contained after involving only slightly more than four acres in active fire. Farther south outside Big Piney, the Soda Lake Fire has now been declared controlled.
A lightning fire in Darby Canyon northeast of Victor, Idaho was contained to five trees. All of these fires were lightning caused, and lightning strikes elsewhere on the forest can be dormant for several days before also erupting into a fire.
Fire officials in the region urge the public to keep an eye out for and report any smoke that may be seen where it is out of place.
