On Thursday, July 11, at approximately 10:40 a.m., a vehicle with five occupants accidentally drove off the roadway and into the Semi-Centennial Geyser thermal feature near Roaring Mountain, located between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction in Yellowstone National Park.
All five occupants managed to exit the vehicle on their own and were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Today, July 12, law enforcement rangers temporarily closed both lanes of the roadway near the accident site to safely remove the car from the thermal feature. The vehicle was fully submerged in about nine feet of water. The Semi-Centennial Geyser thermal feature has acidic and hot surface water temperatures, around 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

The roadway was closed for about two hours during the vehicle recovery process and has since reopened. Yellowstone National Park extends its gratitude to Hanser’s Automotive, US Water Rescue Dive Team, HK Contractors, Resource Technologies Incorporated, and Yellowstone Park Service Stations for their expertise and professionalism in quickly and safely removing the car.
This incident is currently under investigation, and no additional details are available at this time.
