The public comment period for the Mountain Goat Management Plan and Environmental Assessment is coming to an end. Comments will be accepted through Friday, February 15. Currently the nonnative mountain goat population within the park is estimated at approximately 100 animals. The goats are displacing the native population of bighorn sheep in the Tetons. The mountain goats within the park are likely from a population that was introduced outside the park southwest of the Teton Range in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Three alternatives to respond to the situation have been identified in the environmental assessment; no action, lethal and non-lethal removal of nonnative mountain goats, and lethal removal of non-native mountain goats. The comment period for the plan was extended after the government shutdown to ensure that the public has 30 days to review and provide comment. Any written comments received or entered into the website prior to the shutdown will also be considered. The plan is available for review at parkplanning.nps.gov/mountaingoat.
