Governor Mark Gordon yesterday addressed growing concerns about water supplies downstream from Wyoming – specifically as it pertains to the Colorado River Compact. In the past years of drought, more water is being drawn down from reservoirs up and down the Colorado River system. Wyoming, being at the headwaters of the rivers that flow into the system, has been challenged in keeping the reservoirs filled and able to send water downstream.
“Wyoming has for the first time in the time we have been part of this – and the Bureau of Reclamation controls all those reservoir – the Bureau of Reclamation has pulled on Flaming Gorge. For the first time, Flaming Gorge level will diminish this year, and probably will diminish more next year if we don’t have recharge of snow, rain, etc.”
Gordon discussed the concerns about Wyoming continuing to be able to meet its commitment under the compact and says there is discussion about increasing reservoir capacity in the state as the drought has caused run-off to diminish, and so more has to be captured for irrigation, industry and meeting the interstate commitment.
