Governor Mark Gordon says he has spoken with the governors of Montana and Idaho about the possibility of holding a grizzly bear summit to address the growing population of grizzly bears throughout the region. Gordon’s announcement comes several days after Montana Steve Governor Bullock announced the formation of an advisory council in Montana to try to spur discussions around states having a greater role in grizzly management in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Gordon says it would be good to discuss what options the states have while the legal battle over the fate of the recovering grizzly population continues. A judge last year reinstated protection for grizzly bears after the grizzly was removed from protections under the federal Endangered Species Act in 2017.
