It has been a familiar message in the efforts to stem the spread of the COVID-19 virus to wash one’s hands frequently, and many are turning to the frequent use of hand disinfectant as an alternative. However, Dr. Brent Blue points out that while the waterless disinfectant is helpful, it is not as effective as actual hand-washing.
“Without question, hand-washing is the best thing to do – for 20 full seconds. It’s not just a matter of rinsing under some water and then immediately drying your hands. It really requires 20 full seconds, and that’s very, very important. Hand sanitizers are the next best thing. They need to be at least 60% alcohol which most products are. You can actually make it at home with 60% isopropal alcohol which is rubbing alcohol, and some glycerin. But, the important thing to remember is that washing your hands is more important than anything else.” Blue said.
Meanwhile, the Wyoming Public Health Laboratory reports having completed testing for 16 individuals since March 5th. Results were negative for all but one and an earlier test was sent to CDC that was also negative. Testing must be requested through a healthcare provider to our department; priorities for testing have been shared with healthcare providers throughout Wyoming. Turnaround time remains quick at the Wyoming laboratory.
