Historic visitor numbers impact National Parks

Two US Senators are calling for the Biden administration to clarify the impact of more people visiting the country’s national parks. Senator Angus King of Maine and Senator Steve Daines of Montana say they want to know the impact the increased attendance is having on the parks, the visitor experience and the surrounding communities.
A number of the more popular national parks have had to invoke a reservation system for visitors to even enter the parks, while many other parks are wrestling with the impacts on their parks’ infrastructure, not to mention the crowded summer traffic on park roads.

The senators say there have been “historic numbers of National Park visitors,” including Yellowstone National Park, which saw annual visits increase from about 3.6-million in 2010 to nearly 4.9-million last year, and Acadia National Park’s attendance which grew from about 2.5-million to about 4.1-million in 2021. Specifically, the visitor attendance in both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks broke all previous records since the parks were first established.
