Jackson Hole Airport is urging residents to check now to see if their drivers’ licenses and IDs are “Real ID” compliant. While Wyoming residents and other residents of western states may not have trouble boarding flights after October 1st, 2020, residents of some other states very well might. That’s because of a new law that is taking effect requiring verified identification. Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government set standards for the issuance of identification, such as driver’s licenses. This means such standard forms of identification have been verified with birth certificates, social security numbers, or a variety of other forms of positive identification. The Act and implementing regulations will prohibit federal agencies, like the TSA, from accepting licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. Licenses and ID cards that do comply have a star printed in the upper corner of the card. At this time, there are seven states that do not yet comply.
