The Bridger-Teton National Forest has finalized decisions on a bunch of projects aimed at improving the infrastructure and recreational facilities in Curtis Canyon, near Jackson, Wyoming. These initiatives, developed after extensive research and public consultation, focus on upgrading very degraded roads and enhancing visitor experiences.

Overview of Projects
1. Curtis Canyon Road Repair: The main road through Curtis Canyon will be upgraded, particularly the first three miles from the National Elk Refuge boundary. The project includes installing culverts, re-establishing drainage, and improving the road surface.
2. Expansion of Curtis Canyon Campground: To accommodate increasing visitor numbers, the campground will be expanded to include more amenities such as restrooms, water facilities, and trash disposal services.

3. Relocation of Goodwin Lake Trailhead: The Goodwin Lake trailhead and the associated road will be moved to reduce the overlap of hiking and motor vehicle paths. The new trailhead will accommodate 20-24 vehicles and include facilities for horse trailers. The new trail layout will offer more scenic views and separate pedestrian from vehicular traffic.
4. Installation of Interpretive Signs: Signs will be installed at two overlooks providing educational information and highlighting the views of the Teton Range and Sheep Mountain.
5. Road Spur Repairs and Vegetation Restoration: Specific road spurs will be converted to off-road vehicle trails with an ORV sticker required for access. This change aims to fund continued maintenance and protect local vegetation.
Decision-Making Process
Jackson District Ranger Todd Stiles highlighted that the decision, particularly regarding the Goodwin Lake trailhead, involved careful consideration of long-term sustainability versus short-term fixes. The conclusion was that redirecting resources to develop a new trailhead would provide a more durable solution than continually repairing the existing road.
Expected Outcomes
Once implemented, these projects are expected to improve the safety and sustainability of the Curtis Canyon area.
