The proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2021 proposes a cut of 16% for the Interior Department, which is tasked with managing national parks and public lands.
The Center for Western Priorities has reacted saying slashing funding for our public lands directly contradicts the will of Westerners. Executive Director Jennifer Rokala points to polls, where western voters have consistently supported increasing funding for conservation and requiring corporations to pay a fair share for drilling and mining on public lands.
Senator Mike Enzi assures budgets are a reflection of Administration priorities, but in the end, they are just a list of suggestions, as the power of the purse rests with Congress” Rokala agrees, saying bipartisan majorities in Congress have rejected previous attempts to gut the Interior Department budget and are poised to do so again, and she calls the proposal to cut interior funds “dead on arrival.”
