Don’t be surprised when your answer your doorbell to find a young lady or two standing there. It’s Girl Scout cookie season again. The Girl Scout cookie program in Montana and Wyoming begins today and continues through mid-April. This year, a new flavor has been added to the lineup – Lemon-Ups which is a crispy lemon cookie baked with one of eight Girl Scout Slogans on the top. Still, the national favorite not surprisingly is Thin Mints, although in Wyoming, a study shows that Do-si-dos and Peanut Butter Sandwich are big sellers. All profits earned from the cookie sales stays with the local troops and council, and pay for service projects, learning experiences and Girl Scout camp. Girl Scouting in the United States of America began on March 12, 1912, when Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low organized the first Girl Guide troop in Savannah, Georgia. Internationally, the Girl Guide movement was started by Agnes Baden-Powell, the sister of Robert Baden-Powell who started the Boy Scout program world-wide a short time earlier because popular opinion at the time was against mixed activities for girls and boys.
