Jackson Broncs stumble on the road

The Broncs (2-2) watched their 2-game win streak snapped and remain winless on the road as they were handled with ease by the South Fremont Cougars (5-0) in St. Anthony, Idaho last Friday by a 34-14 score.
In a game broadcast by Jackson Hole Radio, both teams struggled to find rhythm in their offense until South Fremont’s sophomore quarterback Bryce Johnson just took the game over. At 6’3” 215, Johnson used his size to lead all rushers off numerous option-keepers, and extended pass plays by shirking off Broncs tacklers like the JH real estate market dodges global downturns.
The Broncs did an admiral job of bottling up the Cougar running game consisting of Hunter Hobbs and Hadley Hill, but Johnson was a difference maker with his legs and arm.
After a scoreless 1st quarter, South’s size advantage began to pay dividends as the Cougars took a 14-0 lead into the half. Down 27-0 in the 3rd,  Jackson threatened to sneak back into it with the Owen Janssen-to-Seb Brunner slant, but it was too little too late as the Cougars did a good job all night of taking away YAC on Jackson’s quick hitters in the flat.
The Broncs offense has become a bit one-dimensional with the quick passes to slot receivers. South Fremont either studied film or naturally play up on receivers, and their corners made sure tackles. Without Jack Jenkins getting the running game going and Janssen unable to get the ball downfield, the Broncs have to find more pages out of the playbook.
Janssen did have a few opportunities to hit something over the top but dropped passes plagued the first-year starting senior.
On defense, missed tackles were borderline pandemic.
It won’t get any easier for the Black & Orange as they return home to host defending state champs Cody, who haven’t lost since October 9, 2020—19 straight and counting. The ‘other’ Broncs returned several key players from last year’s championship run including QB Luke Talich, RB Remy Broussard, wideout Wilkins Radakovich, and LB Grayson Beaudrie.
Cody vs Jackson. William T. McIntosh Stadium. Friday, September 23. Kickoff at 5pm.
