Trailside Galleries and the Gerald Peters Gallery are pleased to announce the twelfth annual Jackson Hole Art Auction, scheduled for September 14-15, 2018 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Both sessions will be held at the award-winning Center for the Arts in downtown Jackson Hole. Jason Brooks will serve as auctioneer.
Highlights to date include Frank Tenney Johnson’s Branding a Maverick, a 34 x 24 oil on canvas from 1913 estimated at $175,000-$275,000. Fresh to the auction market, this piece is a wonderful example of Johnson’s western work. American master Thomas Moran is also represented with his 1891 Laguna, New Mexico Looking from the East (watercolor, gouache, and pencil/paper, 9 3/8 x 12 3/8 (sight)) estimated at $75,000-$125,000. With a strong showing of Taos Society of Artists, Oscar E. Berninghaus’ Indian Turning the Soil (oil/board, 16 x 20) will be offered at $50,000-$75,000 and Eanger Irving Couse’s Autumn Flute Song (oil/canvas, 12 ¼ x 16) is estimated at $40,000-$60,000. Other important western highlights include works by Gerald Ira Diamond Cassidy, Herman Hansen, Edgar Payne, E. Martin Hennings, and William Gollings.
This year’s sale also includes a number of important works from iconic American illustrators. Among these early highlights are several important oils by illustrator, W.H.D. Koerner. All fresh to the auction market, these pieces are from a private collection with direct descent from the artist. Chief among them is Koerner’s Old Monterey from 1933 (oil/canvas, 28 x 40), which will be offered at $50,000-$75,000. Also on offer is Koerner’s Their Meeting Ground from 1931 (oil/canvas, 30 x 40), estimated at $20,000-$30,000. Known as the “Dean of Illustrators,” Dean Cornwell’s Illustration for “The Enchanted Hill” from 1924 (oil/canvas, 36 x 30) will be offered at $50,000-$75,000. Rounding out this impressive group is Norman Rockwell’s Study for “Fixing a Flat,” (pencil/tissue paper, 17 1/8 x 15 ½ (sight)) estimated at $15,000-$25,000.
Featured wildlife works include Bob Kuhn’s A Last Running Look, a 16 x 24 acrylic on board, estimated at $50,000-$75,000. Other wildlife offerings include John Clymer’s Out of the Silence (oil/board, 20 x 30) also offered at $50,000-$75,000, and Robert Bateman’s Evening Light (acrylic/board, 28 x 48) estimated at $30,000-$50,000.
