On September 11, 2024, the Jackson Hole community will gather to honor the sacrifices of emergency responders on the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, along with other local emergency responders, invites residents and visitors to participate in two events commemorating the responders who gave their lives in the aftermath of the attacks and those who assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts that followed.
The day begins with a 9/11 Ceremony at 8:00 a.m. on Town Square, where the community will come together to remember the events of September 11, 2001. Later in the day, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., the annual Snow King Hill Climbwill take place at the base of Snow King Mountain. Participants will climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, each carrying the identification badge of a first responder who lost their life on 9/11.
Interim Assistant Fire Chief Brian Coe of Jackson Hole Fire/EMS highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “This is an opportunity for the Jackson Hole community to remember the events of 9/11 and help heal the wounds created by the terrorist attacks.”
The Hill Climb honors the 343 firefighters, 37 Port Authority police officers, 23 NYPD officers, and 8 EMS workers who perished on 9/11, as well as the many who have since died from complications related to their service in the rescue and recovery operations. Participants will receive free water, food, and a 9/11 Snow King Hill Climb t-shirt, while supplies last.
First Responders in Jackson have coordinated this event since 2016, and it continues to grow as a tribute to the lives lost and affected by the tragedy.
