The Jackson Town Council will take up the topic of Pathway Safety and E-bike Usage at their Monday workshop.
Teton County/Town of Jackson Pathway Coordinator Brian Schilling will present options to improve safety on the community’s bike path system through education, infrastructure, and regulatory measures.
Schilling says that continuous education is key to getting riders to use the pathways safely and they work closely with their partners like Friends of Pathways to reach out to school kids to learn about bike safety.
Schilling says, “We also take every opportunity we can to remind people about pathway etiquette and pathway guidelines these are things like travel on the right pass on the left ring your bell when passing and pass safely don’t block the pathway when you come to a stop and signal your intentions and when you’re on the roadway make sure that you’re following the rules of the road.”
The Town will also consider the installation of some new infrastructure on the paths that could help slow down traffic in congested or dangerous areas of the system.
Schilling said, “So we might be installing chicanes or gates at the at certain slow zones on the pathway system so we have high traffic areas where there’s a lot of different types of activity there’s going to be little kids learning how to ride bikes there’s going to be people crossing the pathway like Garaman Park along Flat Creek and then over at the ball fields by the school campuses where you just have again many different uses so one thing we want to do there is just slow people down as they’re going through those areas.”
The town will also consider potential age requirements for bike riders and a possible speed limit.
